CROP Walk – The Walk Against World Hunger

Valley UU has participated every year for many, many years, in CROP – sponsored nationally by Church World Service, and locally by WHEAT, World Hunger Ecumenical Arizona Task Force.

These Crop Walks are held annually and all over the world. It is the answer from the faith community to the horror of world hunger. In the Valley, there are five such walks, spread over the valley. There are walks going on all acros

World events are creating more and more refugee situations = hungry people. A small amount from a lot of caring people will build into the weapons needed to fight hunger.

Our church social action is focused on some local issues this year, but the need remains, and the opportunity is there for those who would like to become part of this effort. Remember that Rev. James Ford was the president of the WH

The CROP Walk is a good family activity. In most of the participating churches, it is a planned activity for the youth group, with competition for collection the most in pledges.

At VUU, I am carrying on the tradition. I quite shamelessly admit – nay - brag! that I do not actually walk. (You would hate to see me collapse!) But I certainly do accept pledges for this cause.

There are more than 350 members in VUU church – shouldn’t at least a quarter be joined in this good work? Only 39 are now identified as UUSC members. At least 25% would be something to be proud of. Another 40 UUSC memberships would

On Nov 18, our children will distribute little colorful boxes to the congregation. Put this box on your dining table. It is a Guest at your Table. "Feed" this box at every meal. See how your loose change will add up

Let’s see how much real good our congregation can do – our church, and all of the UU congregations across the whole world. What Good Work!

DONATIONS SOUGHT FOR WEST VALLEY U. U. CHURCH BUILDING PROJECT

Dear Fellow Unitarian Universalists,

Many of you are aware of West Valley U.U. Church, our struggles to grow, and our attempts to find a permanent home.  We had our initial service in 1983 and were founded to fulfill a need for a liberal voice in the Northwest Phoenix

We have held a capital fund raising campaign for the past two years, which has been quite successful for such a small congregation.  With our Capital Funds, our increased member pledges and the member loans, we have proceeded with

buildings of a similar size (36' X 60') at about $100,000.  Additionally, the Design Review requirements (the final approval process with the city of Glendale) have increased our costs considerably beyond what we planned (or wanted

Currently, we have temporarily halted the project, to seek other sources of funding. We are not eligible for any grants or loans from the UUA programs.  Our membership is too small to service any more debt at this time. In the past

We are asking for any donations that you might give to assist us in completing our building project.  At this point loans are not helpful unless interest free for five to six years when we hope we will have grown enough to be able

pledges.  Specifically we need donations to purchase a new modular building for use as a sanctuary and for completing the site improvements required to open our doors.

As congregations, we have entered into a covenant with Unitarian Universalist Association and with all other UU congregations, "promising to one another our mutual trust and support."  We do not wish to deprive your church of any c

Our major projects are knitted afghans all of which are given away. In completing the afghans we’ve discovered that crocheters put the finishing touch on the edges, so they have become among our most valuable members.

You might be interested in knowing that so far this year we’ve given away over fifty afghans. Where? To the Oncology section of Desert Sam, to an Alliance in the East Valley that gives them to foster children for their very own. Hospic

At present we are trying to complete about fifty afghans to give to Veterans in the Phoenix Veterans Hospital some time between Veterans Day and Thanksgiving.

Last year we made afghans for every woman veteran then at the facility. Our own Sue Eskey, a veteran, delivered them for us.

We are fast using up our donated yarn thus our church has permitted us to hold a raffle to earn money to buy more yarn to knit up to make more afghans to give away. Tickets are one dollar each ($1.00) or six for five dollars ($5.00). Y
