Beginning Instruction
First Saturdays:
On the first Saturday of each month, at 9:30 AM, we provide a 30-minute introductioin to Zen Buddhist meditation.
The first Saturday continues with "drop-in" meditation from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Sit for just half an hour or for the entire time. The location is our Chandler facility.
Welcome
The Desert Lotus Zen Community serves the Greater Phoenix area in Arizona, creating a culture for transformation through Zen meditation, koan study, inquiry, conversation, and the arts.
We are affiliated with Pacific Zen Institute (PZI) of Santa Rosa, CA, and look to John Tarrant, Roshi, and Rachel Howlett, Sensei, of PZI for direction and guidance.
On Monday evenings, 7:15 PM to 8:30 PM, we hold a meditation and sutra service at the Valley Unitarian Church, 6400 W. Del Rio St., Chandler, Arizona, in Building B of the Office/Classroom complex on the west side of the parking lot. On Thursdays from 6:15 PM to 7:15 PM, we meet there for sitting meditation only. Look for our schedule of monthly meetings, weekend workshops, and retreats in Events.
December 5 & 6, 2008: Buddha and You Retreat with Rachel Howlett, Sensei, in Chandler

December 8th is the traditional day in Zen for commemorating the enlightenment of Shakyamuni Buddha, and we are honoring his awakening by holding a special retreat to explore how his life story and journey to awakening touches our own life.
On Friday evening Rachel will tell the Buddha story beginning with the dream of his mother, Maha Maya. She will cover his early life, marriage, and departure from the palace, and will follow him up to the point of his awakening under the Bodhi tree.
On Saturday we will take a place in the story to investigate the matter from a personal perspective. The exercise of "taking a place in the story" is a unique way of exploring our own journey through the archetypal stages in Buddha's life.
Rachel Howlett, Sensei, is a koan instructor for the Pacific Zen Institute in Santa Clara, CA, and the Desert Lotus Zen community in Arizona. More information on her work is available at our teachers page.
Both the Friday and Saturday events are scheduled at the Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, 6400 W. Del Rio Street, Building B West Side Parking Lot, Chandler, AZ 85226. The Friday evening talk will be at 7:30 PM, for a fee of $15, and the Saturday event will be from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM, for a fee of $75. Lunch on Saturday will be potluck.
You may attend both days for a fee of $80. Finanical assistance is available. In addition, Desert Lotus Zen community members who wish to meet individually with Rachel on Sunday, December 8, should coordinate that with Deb Saint.
