UUA General Assembly 2017

           Justice GA 2017 is Coming!

  • Interested in moving more deeply into your faith?
  • Looking for an opportunity to learn and grow?
  • Want to have lots of fun and meet interesting people from around the USA?
  • Want a good reason to go to leave Phoenix in June?

General Assembly (GA) is an event where Unitarian Universalists (UUs) gather from around the country and around the world. There are opportunities to learn, opportunities for Social Action, and many ways to volunteer.  This year GA will be held in

New Orleans June 21-25.  Registration opened March 1st and that day was the best day to get housing at UUA sponsored hotel rates.

Please look at http://www.uua.org/ga

If Travel to New Orleans does not appeal, there is an offsite Delegate option. This requires a good computer connection and about 3 days of your committed time. Offsite registration usually runs about half price.  Take a look at:

Those who desire more information about the election, you can go to uua.org/elections. If you have any questions about GA, please call David Sheh sdavid471@cox.net.

2017 PSWD Justice District Assembly

Join Us for the 2017 PSWD Justice District Assembly March 31 – April 2nd 2017

The Unitarian Universalist congregations in Southern Arizona, the Baja Four, invite you to join us for a different kind of district assembly.

This assembly begins now, right where you are with Education about migrant and borderland justice in Southern Arizona. Join us next spring in the Sonoran Desert as thirty partner organizations offer interactive immersion experiences designed to connect you to the social, environmental and spiritual facets of immigration justice. Then, gather with over 300 Unitarian Universalists for worship at the border wall as the Transformative capstone of our gathering.    But it doesn’t end there.

Yes, we will return to our homes, spreading out across our District once again…but we will continue what has begun. We will continue to expand our education. We will continue to deepen our connections. And we will continue to open ourselves to transformation, living out the justice we proclaim throughout the Pacific Southwest District and beyond.

We invite you to join us as we learn, connect, and transform our hearts, minds, and spirits together.

March 31 – Evening Opening Ceremonies at each base city congregation

April 1 – Base city churches act as launching points for field trips on Saturday and welcome folks back for snacks, a business meeting and catered dinner Saturday night. NOTE: international travel times are dependent on border crossing times; those trips are not guaranteed to arrive before the business meeting begins.

April 2 – All 3 base city groups will descend on one border location for an all DA Sunday morning worship.

Immersion Excursions

Our Saturday day-long immersion field trips can be anything from workshops at a local UU congregation to international travel. Most include local travel starting from one of three PSWD congregations. Activities include:

  • Tucson – Economic Refuge
  • Tucson – Faith-Fueled Responses to Immigration
  • Tucson – Animals of the Sonoran Desert (Visit the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum)
  • Tucson – Hospitality for Migrant Neighbors
  • Sierra Vista – Building Capacity instead of Walls
  • Amado – “Deterrence by Desert” and Humanitarian Aid
  • Amado – Borderlands Water and Walls
  • Amado – Creating a Culture of Peace
  • and more…

OWL for Older Adults!

Dear UU Friends,

The VUU Religious Education department wants to apply to the UUA to be a field test congregation for a new “Our Whole Lives” curriculum for older adults, aged 50+ yrs.  Can you help us find eight (8) participants?

We need confirmation of participation by this Sunday, Jan. 29 by contacting Marci Beaudoin at re@vuu.org.

Program Details

  • Seven classes on Sunday afternoons in Board Room from 12:30-2:30 pmFebruary 19 to April 2
  • Taught by Molly McNamara and Peter Schweizer, trained OWL facilitators
  • $20 per participant

“OWL for Older Adults takes a values-based, social justice approach to the sexuality of adults in mid-life and beyond. It is one of a select few curricula designed specifically for a growing population of adults aged 50 and above.

Most adults aged 57 to 85 consider sexuality an important part of life even if they do not have a partner, yet their lack of access to sexuality education can have personal and public health ramifications. The information that is available tends to focuses on sexual dysfunction and ageist assumptions rather than on the benefits and joys of healthy sexuality.

OWL for Older Adults reduces shame, normalizes age-related changes, enhances knowledge about relationships, and increases older adults’ awareness of and confidence in their sexual choices and possibilities. It helps older adults enjoy the life-affirming benefits of sexual expression (solo or partnered) while supporting participants to determine when, how, with whom, or whether they will be romantically and/or sexually intimate. The curriculum also equips participants to move beyond their intellect to address the attitudes, values, and feelings they have about their own and others’ sexuality.

OWL for Older Adults joins the highly acclaimed comprehensive sexuality education series co-published by the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ.”
