Love is our Doctrine. Service is our prayer. Justice is our calling.

Desert Notes

11-10-2022

I spent Election day working as an election defender (and ran into new member Larry Johnson, who was also working as an election protector!)  I drove around Mesa with Rev. Patrice Curtis (another UU minister) and checked in at polling sites to see how things were going and report issues.  It was fun, and we met a lot of cool people.  Some of the polling sites were having more fun than others…Shout out to Mt. Calvary Baptist Church where several groups pitched in for bounce houses, a DJ, food, and were having a blast together.  Two years ago I did this in Georgia, too.  In addition to canvassing with HealthCare Rising, text banking with the Poor People’s Campaign and UU the Vote, this was a way for me to support democracy and live my core values.  But more importantly, I am planning to be at the IAF/VIP training next week and to participate in the delegates assembly.  I’d love to see VUU folks come, too.  Organizing is how we really begin to make change tangible in our communities. VIP is one of several organizations working to connect and amplify voices around issues that impact our communities and offer solutions to shared struggles and oppressions.  I invite you to learn more and get involved–we have so much work to do around reproductive justice, access to health care, economic justice, environmental justice and human needs that aren’t being met.  We need to show in all the many ways we can–as advocates and service volunteers, as organizers and caring neighbors, as leaders and followers and folks who show up when the call goes out.  Let’s get this party started!  Because no matter what we do, we need to do it with joy, connection, and the kind of energy that says we aren’t done yet!

Sunday Nov 20, 2022, ”Make this place your home!” We will include the Cornbread ritual in a service that centers our capacity to create a spiritual home together that is nurturing, vibrant, and building its capacity for transformation and healing–our own and with others as we address the needs of neighbors and the communities we live and grow in.

Please fill out the Christmas Eve service survey soon!
